Interview with Kudzi Hudson and Tonderai Munyevu

Actors Tonderai Munyevu and Kudzi Hudson talk us through the exploration of text, culture and character they performed throughout the workshop process of Gliwice Hamlet. Singling out a number of aspects of the process – from the presence of academics and translators to the joys of working with a translation that wasn’t ashamed of its idiosyncrasies, to the freeing ‘lack of pretext’ as to why black actors were doing a Polish play – Hudson and Munyevu describe their journey towards a text they loved but didn’t always understand: ‘it’s a given that there are things an audience won’t understand, in any theatrical text – so therefore, theatrically, what are we going to about it?’
