Interview with Kélina Gotman (Part 2)

In this clip, scholar-translator Kélina Gotman discusses how she approached the translation of NDiaye’s The Snakes in the context of the Translating Theatre project. to Lawrence Venuti’s idea of ‘foreignisation’ as a natural concept in the context of her translating practice. Explaining how Lawrence Venuti’s idea of ‘foreignisation’ maps naturally onto her practice – her objective as a translator has often been to ‘create an estrangement in the language, especially when dealing with high classical French’ – Gotman recounts how the project’s methodological coordinates allowed her to made the bolder choice, continuously resisting a tendency for translations to be more conservative than the original texts.
